Art Residency: ART, [HE]ART, [E]ART[TH]

Art Residency ART, [HE]ART, [E]ART[TH] at BABEL Cultural Organization

From 17 June until 17 October 2024   I  Alcobaça, Portugal

ART, [HE]ART, [E]ART[TH] is an international artistic residency situated in Alcobaça in Portugal organized by BABEL Cultural Organization. Five participating artists were invited to immerse themselves in the rich history and cultural importance of ceramic arts, mastering traditional techniques while engaging with local artisans. Through numerous workshops, studio sessions, and excursions, the residency nurtures an atmosphere of experimentation and collaboration, inspiring an exploration of clay and its' sustainable potential in contemporary visual arts.

During my four-month residency, I developed several series of works using experimental forms of practice, inspired by nature and its landscapes. Through photographic and video documentation, I captured interventions in nature, which were later exhibited at the Babel Gallery as part of the International Ceramic Congress. In addition to this series, a collection of sculptures combining clay and metal was displayed at Valado dos Frades in the exhibition O Lado Fragil do Fogo.

In 2025, a large-scale ceramic mural (8 meters) will be officially unveiled in a public space within the Babel Art Organization. The mural, which was conceptually and practically initiated during the residency under the mentorship of architect Tiago Quadros, will be a significant addition to the city’s cultural landscape.

This residency is made possible with the generous support of the Culture Moves Europe programme.
